Despite a decade passing since Nelson Mandela left us, we continue to celebrate his life and his values of freedom, self-determination and equality. This year’s festival features talks, meetings and performances, all alongside the annual ZAM Nelson Mandela Lecture.
This year's ZAM Nelson Mandela Lecture will be delivered by three speakers, each with their own connection to Mandela and each strongly reflective of his ideals. The speakers are Marcus Desando (South Africa), Panashe Chigumadzi (Zimbabwe) and Jerry Afriyie (Netherlands/Ghana). Presentation will be by Ikenna Azuike.
The main programme, which places the Lecture alongside performances by the Soweto Skeleton Movers, Sites of Memory and Ntjam Rosie, will be opened by Amsterdam Alderman of Culture Touria Meliani.
About the speakers and participants:
Panashe Chigumadzi is an award-winning writer and cultural historian with a background in African literary studies, whose work transcends gender, geography and generations. She explores themes of race, religion and spirituality, African philosophy, Black feminism and Black internationalism. In 2018, she published the book These Bones Will Rise Again. She has served as a columnist for The New York Times and a contributing editor for the Johannesburg Review of Books, and has been published in The Guardian, The Washington Post and The Sunday Times, amongst others. In 2015 she lectured as a Ruth First Fellow, and the following year she curated the prestigious Abantu Book Festival, South Africa's premier gathering for Black readers and writers. She is currently a researcher at Harvard University's Hutchins Centre for African and African American Research.
Jerry Afriyie (also known as Kno'Ledge Cesare) is a poet and human rights activist who works primarily against racism and discrimination. He is a co-founder of the human rights organisations Nederland Wordt Beter and Soul Rebel Movement. He also co-initiated the action group Kick Out Zwarte Piet as well as the annual Day of Empathy, which is held each year on May 3rd. With Nederland Wordt Beter, he gives guest lectures throughout the year and enters into discussions with various groups, organisations and institutions in the country about the history of slavery and its repercussions in Dutch society. He emphasises his personal growth, stating, "You cannot demand progress from an entire country without yourself growing with it”.
Marcus Tebogo Desando has been the director of the Prince Claus Fund since 2022. Growing up in the latter days of apartheid, Desando discovered culture as "an opportunity to escape poverty”. Today, he makes it his business to help people realise their dreams across a wide range of media. He is the former CEO of the Johannesburg Arts & Culture Trust, a professional opera singer and the former director of the Gauteng Opera.
Sites of Memory is a foundation which organises activities around our shared cultural heritage and the hidden and underrepresented stories of the Netherlands and its former colonies. It was founded by Jennifer Tosch, a cultural historian and the founder of Black Heritage Tours, and theatre director and programmer Katy Streek. Since 2016 they have created an annual site-specific performance about the hidden stories from Amsterdam's role in slavery and colonial histories.
During FACE FORWARD Jennifer Tosch, Jörgen Gario, Jomecia Oosterwolde, Jahcysha Boschman and Houda Bibouda will all perform parts of a special performance titled Future for the Past, which is an artistic exchange project between multidisciplinary artists from the Netherlands and South Africa.
Ntjam Rosie is a jazz singer who has been making a name for herself for several years. The Cameroon-born singer released her debut album 'Elle' in the Netherlands in 2010. She has been performing regularly ever since, including at the North Sea Jazz Festival, and has built up a formidable catalogue. 2020 saw the release of her sixth studio album, and this year's re-release of 'Elle' sees her collaborating with young talents. Rosie has worked with the likes of the Artvark Saxophone Quartet, Eric Vloeimans, and Teus Nobel, as well as the Metropole Orchestra, Sinfonia Rotterdam, and the Netherlands Wind Ensemble. Rosie also appeared in Dear Winnie, whose director, Junior Mthombeni, will be present during FACE FORWARD.
Soweto Skeleton Movers in collaboration with Lloyd Marengo & Jonzi D.
Soweto Skeleton Movers is an urban dance group from Soweto, a township of Johannesburg. The dancers are famous for their distinct, snake-like agility and indomitable energy. They dance Pantsula, a South African style that combines breakdance, house and street dance with acrobatics and fast footwork. The troupe broke through internationally at the Breakin' Convention in London in 2016, and later collaborated with living hip-hop legend Lloyd Marengo of Lloydscompany on the children's show Sribi Switi. This year their spectacular show Unbreakable is set to premiere in London in April before coming to the Netherlands at the end of this year. At Face Forward we will see a sneak preview performed by three members, Lerato Motsepe, Molefi Cecil Rakitla and Junior Sphesile Hlongwane.

Tien jaar na zijn overlijden vieren we de waarden waar Nelson Mandela voor stond: vrijheid, zelfbeschikking, gelijkwaardigheid tijdens een festival met talks, ontmoetingen, optredens en de jaarlijkse ZAM Nelson Mandela Lezing.
De ZAM Nelson Mandela Lezing wordt dit jaar uitgesproken door drie sprekers, die zich elk op hun eigen manier verbonden voelen met en sterk maken voor de idealen van Mandela. De sprekers Marcus Desando (Zuid-Afrika), Panashe Chigumadzi (Zimbabwe) en Jerry Afriyie (Nederland/Ghana). Presentatie: Ikenna Azuike.
Het hoofdprogramma met de Lezing en optredens van de Soweto Skeleton Movers, Sites of Memory en Ntjam Rosie wordt geopend door de Amsterdamse Wethouder van Cultuur Touria Meliani.
Over de sprekers en de deelnemers:
Jerry Afriyie (ook bekend als Kno'Ledge Cesare) is dichter en mensenrechtenactivist en zet zich voornamelijk in tegen racisme en discriminatie. Hij is mede-oprichter van de mensenrechtenorganisaties Nederland Wordt Beter en Soul Rebel Movement. Daarnaast is hij mede-initiatiefnemer van de actiegroep Kick Out Zwarte Piet en de Dag van Empathie op 3 mei. Met Nederland Wordt Beter geeft hij het hele jaar door gastlessen en gaat hij in gesprek met verschillende groepen, organisaties en instellingen in het land over het slavernijverleden en de doorwerking hiervan in de Nederlandse samenleving. Hij is het meest trots op zijn persoonlijke groei: "Je kunt niet van een heel land vooruitgang vragen, zonder dat jijzelf meegroeit.”

Panashe Chigumadzi is een prijswinnende schrijver, culturele historicus (ze studeerde Afrikaanse literatuur), wier werk gender, geografie en generaties overstijgt. Ze onderzoekt thema’s als ras, religie en spiritualiteit, Afrikaanse filosofie, Zwart feminisme en Zwart Internationalisme. In 2018 publiceerde ze het boek These Bones Will Rise Again. Ze is columnist voor The New York Times, redacteur voor de Johannesburg Review of Books en publiceerde in onder andere The Guardian, The Washington Post en The Sunday Times. Sites of Memory organiseert activiteiten rondom ons gedeeld cultureel erfgoed en de verborgen en ondervertegenwoordigde verhalen van Nederland en de voormalige koloniën. Het is opgericht door Jennifer Tosch (cultureel historicus en oprichter van de Black Heritage Tours) en Katy Streek (theatermaker en programmeur). Sinds 2016 maken zij jaarlijks een locatievoorstelling over de verborgen verhalen uit de slavernij- en koloniale geschiedenis van Amsterdam.
Tijdens FACE FORWARD spelen Jennifer Tosch, Jörgen Gario, Jomecia Oosterwolde, Jahcysha Boschman en Houda Bibouda delen uit de speciale voorstelling Future for the Past, een artistiek uitwisselingsproject tussen multidisciplinaire kunstenaars uit Nederland en Zuid-Afrika.
Ntjam Rosie maakt al enkele jaren faam als jazz-zangeres. De in Kameroen geboren zangeres liet in 2010 in Nederland haar debuutalbum ‘Elle’ het licht zien en treedt sindsdien regelmatig op – onder andere op het North Sea Jazz Festival – ondertussen gestaag werkend aan een oeuvre. In 2020 kwam alweer haar zesde studioalbum uit en dit jaar is er een rerelease van ‘Elle’ waarbij ze samenwerkt met jonge talenten. Rosie werkte met onder andere de Artvark Saxophone Quartet, Eric Vloeimans, Teus Nobel, maar ook met het Metropool Orkest, Sinfonia Rotterdam, het Nederlandse Blazersensemble en Rosie speelde een rol in Dear Winnie van theatermaker Junior Mthombeni die ook aanwezig zal zijn tijdens FACE FORWARD.
Soweto Skeleton Movers - in samenwerking met Lloyd Marengo & Jonzi D.
Soweto Skeleton Movers is een urban dansgroep uit Soweto, een township van Johannesburg. De dansers onderscheiden zich van andere groepen door een uitgesproken, slangachtige lenigheid en een ontembare energie. Hun dansstijl wordt Pantsula genoemd, een Afrikaanse stijl die breakdance, house en streetdance combineert met acrobatiek en snel voetenwerk. Het gezelschap brak in 2016 internationaal door op de Breakin’ Convention in Londen. De levende hiphoplegende Lloyd Marengo, van Lloydscompany werkte eerder met ze samen in de kindervoorstelling Sribi Switi. Dit jaar staat de spectaculaire voorstelling Unbreakable op stapel die in april in Londen in première gaat en eind dit jaar naar Nederland komt. Tijdens Face Forward is een voorproefje te zien, uitgevoerd door drie leden: Lerato Motsepe, Molefi Cecil Rakitla en Junior Sphesile Hlongwane.
